decided to split the leopard seal picture off from the daily species one because of the following absolutely amazing photograph - enough to make anyone green with envy (+almost an invite for a caption competition)

Probably best not to share photos from Playboy despite their alignment with the thread title, eh? 8-)

This is cool, though (from National Geographic):

Why do I feel like a hookah should be in the photo?

Yeah, it definitely has an Alice in Wonderland feel to it, doesn't it?

sometimes you see good pictures, and you think "great shot", or "must have good equipment", but sometimes there's this out-of-this world moment that makes you think "wow!" - let's hope it's not photoshopped

wasn't it a fairly recent piece of art ? may have had something to do with drawing attention to the dangers of global warming and rising sea levels, but i'm guessing here

The artist is Jason deCaires Taylor (who does some really cool underwater work) and he seems very environmentally focused. Here's a write-up on that sculpture which is called Vicissitudes 2:

http://weburbanist.com/2009/09/09/79-un ... culptures/

Quote:
14 feet below the surface, the Vicissitudes seem to change, depending upon light and weather conditions, while their cement finish and chemical composition actively encourage the establishment of coral and marine life. The figures are in the shape of children not by mere chance, but because children are highly adaptable and naturally progress, shaped by their environment and social interaction. Children are the hope of the future, and may create a sustainable and well-managed environment for their future generations.

Oh... wow!

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Bodies-Skulls/11823171

Quote:
The New Cruelty was commissioned to New York based television production company True Entertainment to photograph a series of still-life images of preserved human skulls, bodies and various internal organs featured in the famous Bodies Exhibition. These images were used to illustrate and explain complex illnesses for the show Mystery Diagnosis.

i've seen things like that in the Hunterian museum in London where they presumably filled various parts of the body such as veins and lungs with some sort of plastic to show its intricate structure

how's this then :
