ok, i've cheated a bit here : this toucan's picture was taken in a bird park (near Iguazu Falls), not in the wild - it's a green-billed toucan (Ramphastos dicolorus)

Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine. A long dead one and the trunks of two live ones. These are located in the Mount Goliath natural area on the flanks of Mount Evans, Colorado. Some of the trees are over 2000 years old. The mountain in the background is Chief Mountain, where there is another smaller stand of bristlecones, and which is where the painting I posted a couple of weeks ago is from. So now I have a picture of a dead bristlecone on Mount Evans with Chief Mountain in the background, and another of a dead bristlecone on Chief Mountain, with Mount Evans in the background.

I love symmetry.

mind you this reminds me of the time i saw Lonesome George in the Galapagos : he looked sooooo bored
not surprising that he died only 2 years later at the relatively young testudinal age of 102

I found that I have at least three frogs living on my porch. I think they are eating the insects that the porch light draws in.

Nice photo Olinguito. Herons are wonderful but they're so darn shy - you only have to look at one and it flies off in a disgruntled temper.

feeling rather chuffed - the first time i got a decent shot at a kingfisher in the UK (i managed to capture other kingfishers in Botswana and Brazil, but although i've seen the british type of kingfisher before, this is the first time it was sitting still for long enough for me to get some pictures taken)

Stock doves are shy creatures and not easily approached by amateur wildlife photographers. You would be lucky if you could get within ten metres of them to get a decent shot with a modest smartphone camera. Therefore this was the best I could do with the pair I spotted at Valentine’s Park this morning.

    Image

They are not woodpigeons because they lack any white markings on their plumage. From that distance they can only be confused with feral pigeons. But the Feral Pigeon or Rock Dove has a complete transverse black bar on its wing whereas that of the Stock Dove is incomplete.

Image

These guys definitely show an incomplete marking.
