A local species of colonial bryozoan... freshwater, feels like a huge chunk of jello... , they only get this big in places where snail eating fish are common, snails eat them like candy...

a few months ago we had a minor invasion of ladybirds
here's one of them - tentatively i'd say it's a kidney-spot ladybird, which makes it rather rare

Image

this one, on the other hand, is the more common harlequin ladybird

something i sometimes get annoyed by with my camera : you think you got a good shot looking at the view finder on the camera, but when you see it full size on the computer, it's all grainy, more often than not because of a combination of high zoom and poor light

this is what it looks like in the view finder :
Image

and this is the same picture on the computer :
Image
(you'll have to click on the thumb to see it full size, otherwise it won't fit)

any suggestions what i can do about it (apart from getting myself a better camera) ?

oh, and btw, this is a goldfinch, taken close to the toll ridge near Dolgellau, North Wales

I'm no expert, but my wife uses something called "raw format" on her camera and then is able to do a lot more with the adjustments once downloaded to her computer. I'm uncertain if that helps with low light / high digital zoom pixelation issues. Perhaps simply a bigger lens is all you need (so as to minimize use of the digital zoom)?

i'll have to check whether my camera has a RAW option
as for a larger lens, i'm afraid that's not possible on a Canon SX240, so maybe at some point i might want to invest in another camera - it may have to wait for another safari holiday to get the excuse though, and for the time being there's none in the pipeline

Well, given how amazing your photos are with what you're already using today, I'm sure any investment you make in improved equipment will result in a huge return... at least for folks like me and our other members who benefit from seeing your shots... which are quite consistently stunning. :)

Went on a coach trip with some people to Cambridge* last Sunday. The weather was surprisingly good – surprising given all the rain and flooding sweeping through the country this winter – and this Peacock Butterfly (Inachis io) was out on the grounds of Christ’s College, basking in the sunshine and thinking it must be spring already.

*Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK (not Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA).

funny enough there's an article on the subject to be found on the BBC website :

Farmland butterflies bounce back

with the warning of a reversal if they come out too soon out of hibernation

Seems Flickr no longer allows you to post photos to bulletin boards so I have to post the url link. After this it's goodbye Flickr for me. This is a sea cucumber on Tunnels Beach, which is a fabulous uncrowded sandy beach on Kauai.

Hawaiian gold dust day gecko. Thought to be introduced to Hawaii by Europeans, but possibly earlier introduction. This one was in our B&B climbing on my glass of mango juice. They have no known negative environmental impact, except for pooping in your house and surprising you by chirping loudly.
