Please take a moment to briefly say hello, perhaps tell us what about science interests you, or your experience in science. You might have a passion for it as a student, an educator, or novice. All are welcome here at TSF!

You'll find that some are more passionate about it that others. And you'll find that some have some ideas about science that aren't necessarily correct, but they're still interested. Our aim, here at The Science Forum, is to provide a forum for discussion and advancement of science and science education, but one that is reasoned and rational.

As I write this, I've only just set up the basic forum infrastructure. So I expect the look and feel to evolve a bit. Forum moderators here are called "Charter Members" since they were present at the formation of the charter. But the TSF charter is a living document. So we have the ability to add "charter members" as time goes on. These are voting members of TSF that also moderate discussions and police the forums for abusive trolls and spammers, keeping the environment pleasant for all.

TSF History

The Science Forum has a history that goes back nearly a decade. We started out on a dot com website that was created and run by an administrator we all know and love as (In)Sanity. Owning and operating a forum ain't easy, so he recently sold it to a pair of web developers who, I'm sure, meant well. Unfortunately, what they failed to recognize was that TSF was not a website. It was a community. A group of folk interested in science.

B&B (the new owners of the new tsf dot com) mean well, but they mean to drive traffic to their site more than they mean to foster scientific discussion.

So we, the folk, decided to keep doing what we do best. After valued members were driven away, and others of us grew more and more concerned with our community, we decided to keep the band together.

We're still the same folk of the original The Science Forum(tm). The Science Forum(tm) isn't a website. It's a community of folk. A social group. The primary differences between this bit of Internet real estate and the last is the domain and the database. We, unfortunately, lost all of our database to a sale. That bit of data was created by us but didn't belong to us. It belonged to (In)Sanity and it was his to do as he saw fit. This bit of real estate has the same name but we're now at two domains, .org and .net, rather than a single .com. The new guys get the .com. It's all theirs. They get the database with all of our previous discussions. It's all theirs.

But they don't get to own what ain't theirs: our community.

If you're a returning original member, check out our Charter. A lot of this Charter was assumed but unsaid. Maybe we should have said it years ago. Some of it's new, as a way of ensuring our community persists as long and as loudly as we decide it. If you have suggestions, input, and commentary, leave it in the Site Feedback forum. We can use all the help we can get to get this community back on its feet.

If you're a new member, and you've never visited The Science Forum before July 2011, then you're in for a treat. Our community has been around for several years. We aren't big, and we don't always agree with each other (that's the good part, actually), but we generally like each other.

Returning community members, get me a PM or a message so I or one of the Charter Members can get you recognized as an "original member."

New community members, leave us an intro post and get to know the rest of us. We're glad to have you here. In your introduction post (in the Introductions forum), it would help also to tell us how your heard about The Science Forum (TSF original). Thanks, and welcome to the community.

this message should be prominent on every forum where there's arguments about free speech - that' 99.99% of them then :

Welcome Arpan! The forum is fairly quiet, but if you make some posts you will wake some of the residents up and they can provide good conversation.
