Costa Rica stone spheres. What were they designed for?
Some records date back to around 500 bc.
Why are many things dated by B.C. standards?
Is it because records were only kept from the time of Christ and it was just pure guesswork or something else?

This shouldn't be in Earth science. It fits in Anthropology & Archaeology

As for BC standard, it's not really used by science, unless they are also religious nutters, or trying to engage the public as a common reference point. I'd much prefer, an actual event rather than a mythological one.

isn't BP (before present, the year 1950 taken as the present) the more current usage to designate age ?

It gives the current main suggestions for why they were made. What more are you, looking for?

This:They are thought to have been placed in lines along the approach to the houses of chiefs, but their exact significance remains uncertain.

Given that the culture is lost, what do your expect other then wild unfounded guessing?
