This is a science forum so actual data is desired over fairly useless anecdotes.

Since the Forum has a Social Sciences section, I was wondering to what extent you agree or disagree that personal anecdotes - or, direct human experience, phenomenology - may be regarded as valid data?

Whether or not we call it data, valid or otherwise, is IMO irrelevant; a semantic quibble that is largely a waste of time.

What matters (to me, anyway) are the conclusions we draw from those individual experiences and anecdotes plus the confidence and certainty we express in those conclusions.

Of course anecdotes are a type of data, but the evidence must scale with the nature of the claim and extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Unfortunately, the plural of "anecdote" is "anecdotes," not evidence.

Aren't there some types of question for which quantitative evidence cannot suffice?

At least, in the Social Sciences?

Maybe. Did you have something in mind?
