i saw these two beetles attached to one another crossing the road - fortunately it was a quiet country road, because they took their time

the strange thing was that the one doing the walking was elongated, whereas the one hanging on was far more rounded - i assume this may be male and female of the same species, but i didn't know that male and femal could look so different from one another in overall shape

Your initial thoughts are right, and this is a male and female mating. Beetles can have highly dimorphic sexes, with a great example being the fire flies.

thanks for the reply - it's good to keep in mind for future observations

What a great picture (they look like someone has sewn them together out of artificial leather material) Your new camera is in great order. :D

I'm still getting used to it, and although it carries great promise, I still manage to produce too many duff ones - the little viewfinder doesn't always indicate that the topic of your aim is slightly out of focus

as for the beetles themselves, I quite like it how you can see how the male seems to be stuck to the female by what appears to be sucker pads on its front legs

Boom... rimshot!

At the risk of getting political in a Biology thread, I've frequently thought of PT Barnum when watching our new Tangerine Tyrant of the snake oil sales variety and his approach to campaigning and now "governing."
