didn't Larry Niven toy with the concept of a sail and a laser cannon in one of his short stories ?

Not just a short story - it was how the Motie ship arrived in Human space in the rather thick novel The Mote in God's Eye.

oh, I must have read an earlier short story that must have been worked out into a full novel later on

The nanocraft scheme has this flaw though: those chip-size probes can't send telemetry back to Earth, nor can they return with onboard data. All I've read of their ability to signal is hand waving. It takes a lot of power to push a clear signal from that distance, moreso against the background noise of Alpha Centauri.

But it's a good way to mail greeting cards.

the story I had in mind is called "the fourth profession" and was first published in 1971 in a magazine called Quark
