obviously, predicting the future is not an easy thing to do, and especially the older stories fail to predict something as obvious (to our eyes) as miniature computers and long-distance communication

but that's something you almost expect of stories from the 1940s and 1950s

what places these stories much more in their time is that the smoking of cigarettes is far more common than it is in our time, and you see it done in stories in situations that appear rather inappropriate, such as space ships or hospitals

strange really, how we try to imagine what life will be like in some future society, but fail to recognise how the mores of that society are so very unlikely to be the same as our own

Or practical necessities. The orbital environment taking great pains to make people sit on chairs. Or require shoes. More likely we'd be striking comfy acrobatic poses in our pyjamas all day. Yet just a few years ago an exercise bike was bolted to the "floor" of an ISS module... it didn't work as planned. The Soviet Mir had a shower installed - after weeks of neglect the cosmonauts were ordered to use it.

I've been told anecdotally that before ~1960's people washed their hair weekly at most. One didn't normally associate washing hair with baths, showers, swimming. It could get done as part of regular visit to the hairdresser. But today many wash their own hair daily. At this trend we should expect public washrooms in future to facilitate scrubbing the face, etc. every few hours. Hmm... and the proliferation of those hand-sanitation stations.
