Merry Christmas

I hope that this would be a good Christmas puzzle for you.

I am writing a book aimed at the under-fives to get them interested in science. My protagonist would be escaping from a castle and ideally employing knowledge from one of chemistry, physics and biology to pass three separate challenges. Can I ask your hive mind for ideas and of course a credit in the book. Initially I had thought of three routes:
1 – passing a guard
2 – getting through the moat
3 – passing through a forest of thorns
I had thought about using catapults, magnets and pesticides, but I am sure that there are far better ideas (and I don’t want to appear to rip off Hartnell’s Doctor Who). I am totally open to more interesting obstacles.

I look forward to your ideas. Thank you in advance and Merry Christmas

P.S Sorry if I am a bit vague. I really believe in the value of science and increasing participation, but as an arts student I am a bit useless.
