Extremely fragile beings

If you're not planning until 5am
If you're not marking for hours after school
If you don't get the pitch exactly right
If you don't use the perfect form of assessment
If you can't recall all of their hobbies
If you don't get the timing exactly right
If you don't use the optimum behaviour strategy
If you don't spend your evening critically reflecting
If you don't read the educational research literature
If you forget to print on coloured paper
If every lesson doesn't contain entrepreneurship
Or socialisation, literacy, numeracy and 100 other subjects
If every lesson isn't a magic show
If you drop your mask
If you show any sign of humanity
If your suit is even slightly creased
If you forget about a meeting

Then clearly you don't have the kids' best interests at heart. Clearly you set out to let everybody down including their parents.

YOU CAN HAVE YOUR FRAGILE BEINGS BACK

my wife was once told after an inspection that she didn't empathise sufficiently with the kids
to which her reaction was "i'm there to teach them stuff, not to be their best pal !"

Jesus. Teaching is a joke.

It's no wonder 40% of NQTs quit. The pressure is unbelievable.

At no point are you thanked, either by the kids or by colleagues, or parents, or anyone in the community - for doing those things.

They only notice when you finally stop doing them because you fall off the work treadmill - because you become physically sick or have a mental breakdown.

If the kids are so precious that the teachers must be run into the ground and abused like slaves then fair enough. You can have your precious cargo, back, society.

Science is what I live for but who needs that in a Science teacher?

I 100% agree. After retiring from engineering (at 60) I was asked by a friend to take up teaching as a Science teacher at a private (religious) school-- they couldn't find a Science teacher. I did it for 5 fantastic years. I had to convince them to let me teach evolution and such, but they needed me and they were not under control of State mandated teaching laws. It was all about actually teaching-- none of the other nonsense.

I had so much fun that after I retired again at 65 and moved to Nevada (to be near family)I decided to try one more time, and got hired as a Math and Science teacher in a public school. What a mistake. Everything on your list and maybe a little more. My students loved having me and I really enjoyed working with them, but all the laws and rules and other stuff drove me crazy. So-- I retired again. Now I tutor-- but they have to want the help and appreciate the help or they don't get the help.

Sounds good :)

So many things I hate about the public school system. The entire ethos is conformity.

It's hard to be innovative when the top-down power structure is telling you exactly what to do, how and when to do it. I think the secret is this, in their heart of hearts the powers that be don't want innovation. They want to churn out tame, dependent little lambs.
