We have a few threads here which encourage active participation from members of all backgrounds and interests and levels of intelligence, and this is another in that same spirit.

In this thread, I encourage authors to offer short meaningful lessons of wisdom that you might want our kids or grandkids to see, read, consider, and digest many years from now when we're long dead and gone.

I'm thinking one or two or three sentence nuggets of awesome that convey some deeper essence about our world, our culture, or our humanity.

If possible, please don't copy/paste words from someone else, and do try to write your own. It's okay to be inspired by others, and even rework existing sayings or reword some truism, but make sure you have a hand in shaping it and your mark rings through.

The point is that you pen these words for future generations to see, and these words are lasting expressions of you being chiseled into this electronic stone which is the internet.

I'll start...

One of the most challenging tasks at which to succeed is using logic and reason to talk someone out of a position at which they arrived using neither.

Far too often we sacrifice the good in pursuit of the perfect.

if at first you don't succeed, give up - it probably wasn't worth doing in the first place

There will be a great many instances in life in which you will have to make an important life decision. Most, if not all, of the time you will be wondering if you are following the right path. The only way to know for sure is to treat life like one grand experiment and try different paths. Note - any change in the desired direction, however small it may be, is still an improvement. It is better not to have an all-or-none attitude in life but rather to acknowledge and welcome small, cumulative improvements. This approach does require a certain degree of patience and tenacity. Give any given path time to work out. And if it doesn't, don't beat yourself up about it. At least when you are older and the option to pursue that path is no longer open to you, you will not look back in regret at a missed opportunity.

This approach has, so far, served me well in life. Essay over.

Without pain and suffering in your life you would have nothing with which to define and provide meaning to your joy and happiness. Pleasure is ultimately meaningless without knowledge of its opposite, despair.

It is sensible to learn from your mistakes, but true wisdom lies in learning from other people's. There are so many more of them.

As you progress through your career, you will learn more from difficult managers than one's with whom you get along. It's that adversity which teaches you to adapt and know how to proceed in nearly any situation you encounter in the future. If you're simply happy and unchallenged all of the time, you tend to coast and ultimately learn very little.

Tosucceed in life you must understand other people.

And the first lesson is that they are all different.

Forget that bullsh!t about treating others how you want to be treated. They are not like you. Treat them how they want to be treated.

The awe inspired by reality and truth will nearly always be more beautifully profound than any story or mythology human minds can create. Don't settle for fairy tales. Always seek accurate understandings and elegant simplicity.

If you ever feel like you've reached a point of enlightenment while taking drugs, savor and enjoy it, because you're high so you'll forget it in a few hours and go back to reality.

Education is expensive, but ignorance is even more so.

That statement applies not only to children, but to the multitude of quite stupid politicians we see today.

What is really expensive is paying for a formal education but failing to apply critical thinking skills and plain old hard work so that one actually learns and learns how to learn.

There are very few truly stupid politicians, but a great many self-serving and deceitful ones. Real stupidity lies with those who support and elect them.

Hey Dr.R - That wasn't a pithy lesson! :)

It's easy to skip reading the instructions, but it's even easier to look out of place as a result of that inaction. 8-)

Ego and arrogance are true enemies of mankind. Avoid them at all costs. Humility, simplicity and friendliness will reach the human heart far more than pure ego or arrogance.

i dont' want to turn this into a quote thread, but the following from Heinlein is worth remembering :

"... stupidity is the only universal capital crime: the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity."

as Steve Jobs found out at his cost

During times of gift giving, most people will understand if you lack funds or cannot afford to reciprocate, but those same people will not be as amenable to you being an insufferable prickly jerk because you feel different or somehow left out.

Said another way... When a situation is bad, try not to make it worse with a sour attitude.

A relevant joke to reiterate your point:

A phone conversation between husband and wife:

wife: Be careful on the way home, I saw on the news that there was an idiot driving the wrong way down the interstate that you regularly take to and from work.

husband: baby it's much worse than that, they're all going the wrong way!

It's no good waiting for just the right, pretty circumstances to be in place - life will always be messy. The art is to live in spite of the untidiness; all projects must start somewhere.

By that token, we shouldn't attempt solutions to problems in the first place, if the number of problems is then only going to increase exponentially? Unless - the scale of the subsequent problems is less than the original one... :?
