By that token, we shouldn't attempt solutions to problems in the first place, if the number of problems is then only going to increase exponentially? Unless - the scale of the subsequent problems is less than the original one... :?

Hmmm... I wasn't thinking about the cardinality of the solution or problem set. Well, here's my "fix".

There is no such thing as the solution that doesn't come with it's own unique set of problems.
Problems are in the eye of the beholder.

A solution or problem, as one chooses to see it, is a set of conditions on a space. A condition is just an aspect of a conserved quantity. In a space, quantity never changes, just ratios of aspects.

This makes no sense to me.

I suppose I could have said "The two sides of a coin are loss and greater loss", but that just sounds depressing. I will use a trivial example to illustrate what I'm trying to say with "There is no such thing as the solution that doesn't come with it's own unique set of problems". Let's take a coffee cup, an ordinary ceramic one. It could break if dropped, a problem in some environments. If we make the coffee cup out of metal then it is less likely to break if dropped, but now it's really heavy, and rapidly conducts heat away into the surrounding environment. It's like a particular gene that increases the chance of developing some disease while reducing the chance of developing some other disease.

Money cannot buy happiness, but it sure helps keep suffering minimized.

A populace that day in and day out fulminates by inhaling fear and exhaling anger is a populace that is actively suffocating the breath of their own liberty.

Maximum freedom is not attained at minimum constraint, minimum discipline, minimum government.

Money is not wealth.

A larger system created by expanding the dimensions of a smaller system will not behave like the smaller system.

The mode of failure of a complex system cannot ordinarily be determined by examining its structure. (two from John Gall)

A person who dies rich has been a failure in life. (lifted from Andrew Carnegie)

(inspired by the above)

If you're worried about how much something costs and there is no price shown, it's usually best to just keep walking.

It is more important to be a good man than a great man, although if you can manage to be both simultaneously, so much the better.

it's not much of a boast to say that you're good at fire fighting when you've started the fire yourself

A close corollary: Don't blame firefighters for the house turning to ashes if you're the one who lit the blaze. Further, don't tell people that lighting more fires will help your own house to be rebuilt any quicker.

The passing of Gore Vidal recalls another:

as a matter of observation, a disproportionately large fraction of the most accomplished and highest achieving in intellectual fields have had unusual, interrupted, idiosyncratic educational histories.

Not that anyone recommends you quit school as a career move, but just saying - - - - -

Oh, humble observer,
Look to the night sky,
How overwhelmingly unlikely it is that you should exist,
A blip of consciousness in the vast infinite darkness,
Remember therefore what is important in life,
Live in accordance with truth and beauty.

Have the wisdom and humility to know when it is not within your power to be able to save a friend emotionally. That is not to say that you should not try continually, but at the same time, don't beat yourself up about it if it is beyond your control.

Be thankful if all you have to deal with are first-world problems, but don't be afraid to acknowledge that they are still problems and that your life is altered by them.

I think it may be an old Russian proverb "The map is not the territory". Keeping that in mind, if one thinks of Cartesian coordinate system and say, graphing data, then maps are quite manageable. But then my mom was a truck driver and had taught me to read a map when I was very young.

Random tragedies and acts of terror are minor comments against a humanity that responds to them with profound kindness and support at a significantly greater scale and magnitude.

Not everyone can be the one staying at home and drawing on the wall of the cave. Some of us actually have to go out and hunt if we hope to survive.

Well spoken.

Some need to go with the hunter to butcher, wrap and haul home the kill.
