if you persist in claiming that nothing is your fault, whatever has happened, how are you ever going to learn from your mistakes ?

The joy that comes from watching an infant dance and bounce to the sound of music before they can even walk on their own is unparalleled.

Take care to discriminate between what society says will make you happy, and the things that actually make you happy. Trust your own feelings, not the word of your human environment.

when you get older you start to slow down
at the same time the years appear to go faster

that's how the years start to catch up with you

We are a culture drowning in information yet thirsting for wisdom.

that's the data triangle for you : at the bottom there data, the next layer is information, the next layer is knowledge, and only then do you come out as wisdom

Image

as you can see, the quantity becomes smaller as you go up the triangle
never mind how much information you have, wisdom will always be in short supply

But, how would you know for sure what wisdom actually is?

Perhaps a certain attitude or approach is helpful in one situation (and so would be deemed wise) but useless in a different situation?

If wisdom is, rather, a capacity for good decision-making, it might be noted that pretty well every decision is a compromise and has either has a direct negative consequence or else limits, in some way, the potential for good outcomes.

the difference between knowledge and wisdom is instinctive understanding of the problem in hand
look how an expert operates in comparison with a merely competent practitioner : the expert does not bother investigating all the superfluous detail, but immediately reacts on a gut feel which actually leads them straight to the essentials of what the problem is about

(btw, i haven't invented this myself, Malcolm Gladwell's "Blink!" gives a good resume of how grafting of non-experts is no match for the deep understanding an expert brings to the table)

The imperfection of memory can be an outstanding thing. You are lucky you won't remember those three huge blunted molars violently and simultaneously pushing through your gums right now or the trauma of birth, for example.

I have something I call "Macgyver's Code of Ethics" here are a few of entries:

1. Finish what you start, and don't start what you can't finish.

2. Do what you say your gonna do...no matter what. Your word is your honor.

3. Never do anything half-ass....use your whole ass for everything.

4. Never date your best friends ex...no matter what they say....no good can come of it.

5. Never fuck a married person...you don't want to be the cause of someone else's divorce.

6. Treat a whore like a queen and a queen like a whore. :)

7. If something is messed up...tell 'em it was like that when you got there.

Never underestimate just how precious your time is: every 0.5 second is an enormity in terms of living time when compared with the almost unimaginable infinite gulf of time in which you will not exist. Shape your time according to your own desires because it is YOURS.

It's easier to disagree with those who speak in absolutes than those who respect nuance and acknowledge variance in the spectrum of possibility.

There's a hole in the side of the boat. That hole is never going to be fixed and it's never going away and you can't get a new boat. This is your boat. What you have to do is bail water out faster than its coming in.

It's easy to hate someone that you know little about, but once you humanize that person, it becomes harder to hate them.

When faced with a difficult decision to make in choosing between two similar options with different relative strengths and weaknesses in the criteria pertinent to the decision, try not to stress yourself out too much about choosing the 'right' option because, in reality, neither is right or wrong. Your duty is to choose the option that represents the best compromise overall - you will feel better once you commit to a decision and so end unnecessary uncertainty.

i'd go even further : ALWAYS have a plan B
if plan A turns out to be fatally flawed and you don't have a plan B, you're doomed to try and repeat plan A to the best of your ability on the off-chance that one day it might work
