this topic is all about the odd things in life that make you wonder "why"
tbh I'm not really all that fussed about discussing the answer to the question, more into highlighting the odd things in life

like this one :

why do supermarkets have eggs in sizes medium, large and extra-large, but not small ?

The same reason condoms don't have a "small" size ;)

But why are white labcoats £9.99 but black ones £19.99?

mind you, seeing the size of egg you get in motorway services when you order breakfast might explain where the small sizes get diverted to

Why is it that you can think of why questions all day - until someone specifically asks you to recall them?

I'm sure standardisation of equipment comes into it - if you make the same keyboard for drive-up and standard ATMs then you don't have to worry about mixing them up

Marnix is IMO almost certainly correct and I came to the same conclusion.

Why do we subsidize oil but not renewables?

Why do people find assertiveness unromantic?

They want someone who will automatically know what they want. If I like you, I will endeavour to meet your needs, but I can't do that unless you tell me - explicitly - what they are.

I don't know how true this is but I was told (by my first wife) that you can get a fine spray or splashes of the contents of the bowl into the room if you flush with the seat up. I suppose the spray can end up on tooth brushes etc., so I have trained myself to put the seat down.

Sorry, I do realise that my answer is not in the spirit of the thread !, so here is a 'why':

Why is it that the richest people and corporations pay the least tax AND ARE ALLOWED TO GET AWAY WITH IT ??!!

OB

Because the richest are the most powerful; there is nobody to challenge them. In theory, it is the government's duty to redistribute wealth and power in accordance with their electoral mandate. But, in practice, government are themselves seduced by the power and wealth of the richest. They want a cut - or, at least, they want to marvel at the VIPs.

Then the positive feedback loop kicks in: the richest have the most power -> least challenged -> pay least tax as a proportion of their net worth -> become richer and more powerful -> challenged less -> pey less tax.

Dollar is King.

Why do companies continue to set up manned stands in shopping centres?

I was sat for 20 minutes in Morrisons, eating a snack and chilling. A man and woman stationed at a Virgin Media stand. Responses from the public in that time: irritation, impatience, anger, scorn, laughter.

I felt sorry for the staff but I, too, feel annoyed by the stands. Nobody wants or needs them, so... why?

Why on earth do I get one or two plastic bag pushed through my letter box every week, asking me to donate clothing to whatever charity it is. To fulfil the charities wish I would continually have to rob Top Shop or something.

I put those charity bags to good use by turning them into bin liners
better than throwing them away unused

@Rory, yes, you are right about rich people etc., but I look at the lack of public money in the UK and wish that the Government had more balls and that roads, hospitals, schools, railways etc, could be brought up to a decent standard - one appropriate to a supposedly first world country. And not by borrowing endlessly to fund such things, but that every person with a financial link to the country except for tourists should contribute full and fair taxes towards its upkeep.

Richard Branson lounges around in a hammock on Necker island while Virgin stands in shopping centres try to entice yet more people to sign up to increase his fortune. He also keeps sending out unsolicited letters to the same end, which I re-address and post to Necker Island with no stamp. Actually, I haven't received one for a while now, so maybe he has got the hint !

Charities can make a lot of money by recycling clothing, but don't think of old ladies setting things out on trestle tables at the local village hall. It's gone very corporate now, and some modern charities fund head offices and executives etc, and give their salaried employees a nice working environment.

Good idea to use the bags as bin liners. I do that with supermarket bags (that I pay 5p for).

Why are creationists still a thing? Or maybe more accurately why are so many people creationists? Like seriously I have been asking myself this for at least a decade.

Why do we have self service checkout tills in most supermarkets ? I fall foul on many occasions by buying items that flag up, and start a red light flashing above the self service checkout till. This necessitates an operative having to come over to the till to verify my age, they then have to input a code to get the self service checkout till moving again. In my local Tesco there is one operative to 10 self service checkout tills. So on a busy day the self service tills are no quicker than a normal checkout till.

but it does mean that they have the equivalent of 10 tills for one extra operator - "you know it makes sense"

OK, you are probably right. I may start shopping at Aldi or Liddle, and as far as I am aware Aldi and Liddle, do not have self service tills. They have very fast till operators, and you pack your bags in an area after the tills.

I infinitely prefer self service machines to being served by a till operator. I like interacting with people who matter to me about things that matter. Any break from effectively feigning a human interaction is welcome in my book. No, I don't want to effectively sponsor till operators to stay in a job that can be done by machines. Would much prefer that that faux niche dies so that the humans can be re-humanised.

I used to be like this, but then I got over my dislike of people and actually enjoy chatting with people in those jobs. Same goes for servers too. You can learn some interesting info from these people, especially when you're out of your normal area. For instance, I have gotten great restaurant suggestions from these people. Just last week, when I was at a wedding rehearsal dinner, I chatted with one of the people busing tables and he gave me some recommendations of some good restaurants when he found out I wasn't local. I've had similar experiences at gas stations and grocery stores when travelling.

Why do people still choose to work for MLM schemes even after they tried several that failed them already?

I don't know, but I have to say, I look at DNA and think how the hell did that evolve - it looks so much like a piece of computer code to me.

Also, how did things like the Oak gall wasp and other parasites evolve. These are parasites that for example alter the brains of caterpillars or the DNA of an acorn to guard the eggs of the parasite. I can see how that evolved by chance, but I can also imagine a campus in a Silicon Valley equivalent somewhere, with a load of programmers trying to outdo each other by creating more and more bizarre insects, life forms and interactions etc.

Don't worry, I am not turning, but I do marvel at nature.

Well I do like talking to some till operators sometimes. But most of the time I just want to make a purchase and be on my way. I don't want somebody I don't know asking if I had a nice weekend.

Queue barriers where there are never any queues. Shop I visit twice per day has recently installed them at the self service checkouts. Meaning I have to walk an extra 11 metres every day, needlessly.

Perhaps there is a stampede at lunchtime but, I really doubt it. Why?

Do they just want to feel in demand?

Why is it deemed culturally acceptable to joke about people with special needs?

Would you laugh at a man in a wheelchair? Would you laugh at a cancer patient?

But you're happy to mock someone with special needs. Why?

if i had my monty python hat on i'd have to say "yes"
not because they're in a wheel chair or because they're a cancer patient, but even these people are not free from humorous situations that could make it on one of those "funny videos" sites

i once saw a cartoon of a person with massive tumours saying "i hate having cancer - security guards always search me when i leave the job"
i thought it was rather funny in a ridiculous sort of way that someone would have tumours so large that they make your clothes bulge to such an extent that security guards might think you're stealing stuff

It depends if the other person is laughing with you, or if you are laughing at them.

I most probably have ASD but I'm not planning on telling most people, because they stop taking you seriously as a human. They treat you like a child - or, worse, like an object.

Why don't people understand that there are more than two candidates running for POTUS?

not exactly a "why?" question, but still something that's left me puzzled

I once saw a sign near a farm advertising "black horse manure for sale"

2 questions : (1) is this manure from black horse, or is it black manure from any horse ?
(2) what's so special about black horse manure ?

Well matured ,perhaps -so it might scorch tender roots less?

Not sure how you are supposed to compost it. I would expect it normally to be mixed with straw since the horses have to have this as bedding . It would be an aid to composting the faeces as it would provide air and bulk (and perhaps provide a better balanced mix -also extra heat to kill off seeds and pathogens in the mix)
