why does football have referees but cricket has umpires ?

Test-match cricket and one-day internationals do have match referees (in addition to umpires): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Match_referee. Their job is to oversee the whole match, making sure that no rules are broken. Thus, while the umpires' job is to keep an eye on the players, the job of the match referee is to keep an eye on the umpires.

Q: Why hasn't medical science invented a cure for human stupidity?

for the same reason why medical science hasn't found a cure for the common cold : there's so many different ways of being stupid that you have to address a multitude of issues

Because

1) dog crap is crap from an omnivore and is far more revolting that crap from a herbivore, which is essentially just recycled grass. (Sheep droppings have a taste which is not actually unpleasant). I'll guess that flies are far more attracted to dog crap that horse crap.

2) dog crap is very often on footpaths, horse crap too of course, but less often an impediment to humans.

Why would anyone think Betsy DeVos is qualified to be the Secretary of education?

Perhaps for the same reason someone would think Jerry Falwell of Liberty "University" fame is the best choice to lead a Presidential task force on higher education.

Let's open a separate thread if you want to continue the exchange on this topic.

why do you get more drunk (or drunk faster) when you're drinking beer through a straw (if that's true at all, and not an urban myth) ?

I have been drinking cans of Strongbow Original Cider through a straw, when at home , for a couple of years now. Drinking the can through a straw makes the contents last longer, but in my experience does not increase intoxicity.

so, an urban myth then - thought it was too good a story to be true

Perhaps straws speed up the pace of ingestion... like shot gunning a beer or doing a beer bong.

why is it, when you something is unavailable because of maintenance work it's always called "essential maintenance"

is there never anything like "frivolous maintenance" or "run-of-the-mill maintenance" ?

why is it that people with an allergy for peanuts are known to have a nut allergy, when peanuts are strictly speaking not even nuts ?

If Wellington was right that the "battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton" then why did he bother going to Belgium to fight it?
Was his army heading elsewhere and forgot to turn left at Albuquerque?

I have no idea, but I have it on good authority that ending up in the wrong place is due to taking that wrong turn: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8TUwHTfOOU

It's all to do with diet. Something quite specific might be the cause, it could be anything.

Alcohol is common in creating that effect where you can never stop wiping. I think it has something to do with the way it kills gut bacteria or red blood cells. The increase of those in feces increases the wipes needed to clean the bum.

There's an idea for Carlsberg- sponsoring lavatory paper.

No, I did not drink before going to the toilet.

Similarly, why is the past tense of hanging a picture, hung, but the past tense of hanging a man, hanged

Likely because saying a man was hung carries other naughty connotations

the tense must gave changed over time - initially the medieval punishment was "hung, drawn and quartered"
only later did hung become hanged

why do you have to pay extra for metallic paint on a car, when virtually no cars with non-metallic paint are being sold ?
