I'm sorry Rory, but that's one of the downsides of the human condition, you cannot just will someone out of your brain. Life would be so much easier if we could, but maybe it's a good thing that we can't.

When one person breaks your heart, then intimacy with another, even if merely feigned, is the surest quickest path to moving on. #hardtruths

Feign intimacy?

That seems incredibly cruel - I wouldn't wish to do that to someone or to be the recipient of that falsehood.

When you wonder if he ever really cared, or if he is just a good actor.

I think he's just a good actor.

There was a person whom after they had left, my mind would constantly return to imagining them there with me. This left me a destroyed half-thing for a very long time. I could not go on like that, I needed a solution. I finally came upon the trick of saying to myself not so quietly, "Keine Geister!" It's German for "no ghosts". Concentrating on using a foreign language, and the meaning and structure of the phrase (geister is the plural, geist the singular), would give me the opportunity to halt the cycle of thought of her. I still remember her sometimes, and that is okay. It's okay to remember. It's not okay to wallow around in hopeless wanting, at least not too long.

Thanks, GE

I'm not sure if that would work, or if I want it to work - yet

Thanks for listening - nobody (beyond the Forum) knows about it, and I am afraid of being alone with this feeling.

Most definitely, do be patient with yourself. Even if whatever hurt leaves a person feeling scraped out empty where there isn't any feeling left... Well, that empty will pass. It always does.
