Depends on China, really, and how aggressively they want to show their strength. They are, after all, building huge man made islands to use as military bases in the East and South China Seas while investing massively in their navy and arsenal. South Korea will play a huge role in all of this, too, as will other SE Asia nations in economic terms. Makes me glad Obama is working hard to strengthen alliances and build those partnerships before his term ends.

I think it has to be asked, "why is china "building" military bases in the middle of the ocean". Their use would appear to be limited to bullying small countries in the area with little military threat. The US could and would destroy them as easily as the US destroyed the Yamato in WW2, easier really. So exactly what are the islands real uses?

They are trying to better control the area (and likely trying to protect it, as well, as it impacts their own interests economically). Note that approximately $5 trillion of global trade, goods, and commerce flow through those waters every year.

It's also a dominance and power play since the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Brunei also have overlapping claims in the waters. China is edging them out a bit and reminding them who's in charge.

Taiwan has done some build up work as well, but nothing at the scale or pace we've seen from China.

EDIT: I realize this doesn't tie directly to Japan as asked in the OP. Happy to split this off if the request to do so is made.
