i just get the feeling that in here there's the potential for an alternative paper-rock-scissors - all we need is a third one to make up a trio

Which of those beats evidence?

hmmm ... let's replace "axiom" with "i don't believe it" or "because i say so""
i'm sure that some people, even on science forums, think that's good enough to counter any evidence

Axiom beats faith. Evidence beats axiom.

And what beats Evidence (again)?
You are aware how rock/ paper/ scissors works, aren't you?
Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper but paper beats rock.
Each one of them has something that can beat it.

This is why I stick with Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock...

Reason?

Or evidence combined with a healthy skepticism of sense data. Doesn't have a neat ring to it.

Reason doesn't beat evidence. It allows you to view the evidence in context or twist it to support your agenda. The only thing that beats evidence is other evidence that is more robust and/or more closely addresses the specific question being asked.

maybe a new paradigm beats evidence by placing it in a new context ?

I think the problem with constructing this particular ordered modulus is the presence of the word "faith". Faith is pretty bottom of the barrel and is beaten by most anything else. I might say that faith beats being dead, but how often has faith lead to being dead?

Well, none of the factors can exist in isolation. Paradigms are borne of the critical synthesis of evidence through a reasoned and rational/logical perspective. There will be certain axioms and assumptions that underpin the reasoning. And the paradigm author will have a kind of faith in sense data.

Sorry to ruin your game.

Although, you could say that Feynman beats every one of those individual factors (by using them all).

Faith > rock > paper > scissors > lizard > spock > axiom > evidence > reason > paradigm > Feynman > 42

We forgot hypothesis and theory.

I think hypothesis is my favourite. If I had to sleep with one of them, it would be Hypothesis.

Each one of them has something that can beat it.

And what would the new hand signals be? Before you could play you would have to spend half an hour explaining to newbies what an axiom was!
