don't know if anyone has had a look recently at the Charctic Interactive Sea Ice Graph, but the ice cover at the Arctic has already started to come down when in other years it has only just started leveling off

if this goes on, then 2015 could give us a new record low for ice cover, bringing a future ice-free arctic one step closer

It only peaked five days earlier than the mean, so that alone doesn't worry me. But it is starting out significantly lower than average. Might have a good chance at hitting another record if that continues.

it's already being picked up in some of the media :

Arctic sea ice near its all-time minimum low and could break previous record

although one item seems to imply that it's not as bad as it seems : most of the ice loss appears to be on the Pacific edge of what is defined as the "arctic", but is strictly speaking not the arctic ocean - in that part the ice cover is not far from normal

funny this, isn't it - a clear indication how often "if this goes on ..." turns out to be wrong
looking at the same site for the 19th of april, ice cover starts to look more and more like within the standard spread of the last decade

armaggedon postponed ?
