Madonna Mia

A lily-girl, not made for this world's pain,
With brown, soft hair close braided by her ears,
And longing eyes half veiled by slumberous tears
Like bluest water seen through mists of rain:
Pale cheeks whereon no love hath left its stain,
Red underlip drawn in for fear of love,
And white throat, whiter than the silvered dove,
Through whose wan marble creeps one purple vein.
Yet, though my lips shall praise her without cease,
Even to kiss her feet I am not bold,
Being o'ershadowed by the wings of awe,
Like Dante, when he stood with Beatrice
Beneath the flaming Lion's breast, and saw
The seventh Crystal, and the Stair of Gold.

Oscar Wilde

Always

I am not jealous
of what came before me.

Come with a man
on your shoulders,
come with a hundred men in your hair,
come with a thousand men between your breasts and your feet,
come like a river
full of drowned men
which flows down to the wild sea,
to the eternal surf, to Time!

Bring them all
to where I am waiting for you;
we shall always be alone,
we shall always be you and I
alone on earth,
to start our life!

Pablo Neruda

Apparition of a Butterfly

Upon a fuzzy vista – vision blurred –
I tried to focus; nothing ever solid
Came to view, but undeterred, I blinked
An eye to try again. Through the mist
A coloured hue; polychromatic flames
Had flickered at a whim; a rhythm bore
A thrumming too: a naturalistic hymn.
Behold! Were I to find a synonym to
Reproduce or recreate
The apparition of a butterfly,
Evolving through the waning vapour,
Drawing on a sigh from this romantic.
Glory be! The raging sun above
Had fired his furnace, flaming off
The hangers on. Now I saw the flare:
His time has come. He spread a tortoiseshell –
A scene of Mother Nature at her best.
I lay in peace in knowing I was blessed.

Autumn Leaves

Never weep, have no sorrow
Just pretend there’s no tomorrow
Leaves are slowly falling down
Red, orange, green, and brown
Swiftly gliding in the air
Softly landing in her hair

Never weep, have no sorrow
Just pretend there’s no tomorrow
She is sad, with much grief
It feels as if there is no relief
More leaves pass her by
She sadly watches as they fly

Never weep, have no sorrow
Just pretend there’s no tomorrow
Another leaf is falling down
Floating toward a head of brown
A boy reaches for the leaf
Noticing a girl in sadness and grief

Never weep, have no sorrow
Just pretend there’s no tomorrow
Carefully grabbing her tiny hand
Before a leaf begins to land
The moon, gleaming in the sky
Little boy and girl say goodbye

Never weep, have no sorrow
Just pretend there’s no tomorrow
Boy and girl meet once more
Both are older than before
Slowly walking down the isle
The groom gives her a handsome smile

Never weep, have no sorrow
Just pretend there’s no tomorrow
Leaves begin to fall once more
Lady weeping by the shore
The man’s name, carved in stone
The woman is left all alone

Never weep, have no sorrow
Just pretend there’s no tomorrow
One after another, days go by
Here is the woman, left to cry
The leaves always tumble down
Even though there’s no head of brown
You can weep, have much sorrow
Just remember, there is tomorrow

If time were a direction

If time were a direction, like walking down the street, the further I walked the younger I would be
If spending an afternoon visiting the past was easy as taking a walk to the lake
I would take the direction that leads to a long winding road at the top of a hill
Where tall pine trees sway in the breeze, where a young girl with flaming hair waits for me

Her blue eyes shine with joy, with lips as sweet and soft as rose petals covered in dew
If I could again drink deeply of the innocent love that once was offered to me
No distance would be to far to walk; nothing could stop my feet as I walked along that time twisted street
To kiss her neck, smell her hair, feel her young heart beating next to mine, and gaze into her eyes so blue

How many times would I make that trip to a rendezvous addictive as any drug and just as sure not to last?
What did she feel while I held her close? Did her maidens heart thunder with fear or was it desire?
How often would you make the trip along that path twisted in time to relive those moments of romance?
What would be the cost of each of those trips? Would you trade one day of your future for a day of the past

To kiss your sweet young lips, to see the blush between the freckles on your face would be worth any price
I am afraid I would walk that path until my future was gone, until only a ghost would walk the street
Or maybe I would only walk the twisted street once, pull you up on my motorbike and take you away
But would you give up all that has passed into this future for another unsure future roll of life’s dice

Some where, some when, two would be lovers still meet among the fragrant trees
Soft laughter can still be heard over the rustle of the wind through the tall pine grove
Some where, some when, all things happen, all possibilities branch out into the future
Possibilities separated by only a thin veil too strong to be penetrated by a mortal like me

In some possible futures the would be lovers never part, their souls following the same direction
Their paths remain entwined and their hearts beat together through out their lives
Those two whose love matures, and remains true those lovers who are us and yet are not
Is love what penetrates the veil, crosses from world to world, and makes us feel this connection?

The past is gone, the present is fixed, and the future remains unwritten
The memories of those days under the tall pines are none but ours forever

Farewell First Love: A letter for a Friend

I Loved you then, And Love you again.
Two times too many, Some would say.
Two times, Just plenty, I would say.
Only, I miss the Boy of Yesteryear,
The One I was expecting.
Sad when you lay a table for Two,
And find that your old Love is dead.
When did you change?
Too many Autumns passed.
Too many emotions unchecked.
Your Heart, broken.
I do not blame You.

Only know that I forgive You, dear Infidel.
Laugh at me if you will, I know you do.
At my Naivety.
Just don't expect me to change.
Don't expect to defile the Nature of my Soul.
It doesn't belong to You.

Please, if you Find Him again,
Say farewell to the Boy of Yesteryear.
My First Love.
Tell Him I Miss Him,
And wish Him well.

L

MERMAIDS

Cool and wet, in the light of the cold white moon
Clothed only in the phosphorescent waters glow
Where am I? Only the night birds and the fishes know
Near by a gull, disturbed by my swim, sings his raucous tune

The water flows over me like a lovers caress
Onward I drift, with the tides salty stream
Unfettered, my mind begins an oddly familiar dream
A woman appears, standing, like me she is without dress

She dives into the shallow inlets flow
And reappears, glowing with an inner light
I give chase, swimming with all my might
When I arrive at her side, again she dives below

But instead of legs long and sleek
A fishes tail follows her into the brine
Mermaid! the thought rips into my mind
I hesitate, astounded, by this being that i see

Again she appears, this time not alone
Three more of these apparitions, appear in a wave crest
As glowing water cups their bobbing breasts
Their sirens song begins, and i become still as stone

The song, more beautiful than any mortal woman's voice
Captivates me, holds me, unable to think or move
My love, it says, to have them i must prove
As I listen I realize I am being offered a choice

To join them in their home, wet and cool
To swim, and frolic, under the sea
Forever and ever just them and me
Just then a gull cries out, "death is what they offer, you fool!"

When I look back to where the water is dark and deep
Only a fading sparkle marks where sirens swam
I shout out, come back, only the gull reply's "foolish man"
Then I realize, that their love had a price attached, far too steep!

Hey very enjoyable poems so far :)

Goodbye

You only step foot in the same river once,
It always rushes through, new water with new life.
The freshness and purity cleanses my soul sifting through, touching every part of me.
I was naive when I thought this would be easy
That when I dipped my feet in for the first time, it wouldn't last.
I drained every drop out leaving no air for us to breathe.
And I can no longer breathe.
I strained for newness and tranquility in silence
Listening to your breathe, feeling your heart.
We flew on comets and every night I came back down wondering where I left my body.
You were right there to collect my pieces that were left on the floor.
Swinging side to side there were times our fire danced,
Lighting up the sky brighter than any sun or moon.
Perfection can only be measured by flaws,
And growing takes time.
Well I have the time.

I wanted to burn bright like lightning bugs in the night sky,
Instead I was swiftly blown out by my own ghost
Who was watching my every move.
I felt like cloth on the floor, just waiting to be made into a garment to wear.
Dark blue always looked so good on you.
So when I stepped into the river I never wanted to leave.
The constant flow hitting my feet feeling safe and complete
Always wanting more.

More.
That 's the problem.

Trains passing by, hauling seats of bones to their next home
Rattles at each shake of the rails.
I feel the shake.
It courses through my body reminding me I have not yet made a home for myself.
Watching and waiting I have seen others cross paths to their content lives
And I sit splintering at the thought of leaving.
Movement becomes shallow and feeling becomes another word to describe pain.
Pain is real and it lives within me, never letting my head fall to rest and my eyes to see the beauty in front of me.

Soaking now, I wait in this river.
Waiting to dance one last time.
The dance with the fire in our eyes and truth wrapped around our wrists.
I'll become a constant like a thread that never unravels
And I'll never cut the string.

So let's move along and shape to the river as it takes us,
You one way and me the other.
As it splits into two I press my life forward with love in my heart and strength on my chest.
Until the day the river becomes an ocean of wholeness, I lay my path flowing in front of me.
To bring the fear I feel and cast it from me.
Crush it under stones at the bottom of the water never letting loose again.
I felt free as it carries me, baptizing me to be renewed again.

I'll close my eyes and be still, finding the sounds of your voice one last time.
It echoes and calls back to me anytime I need.
Currents pull me along, away from the shore where I stood.

Goodbye My love,
For wherever there is a river, there is you
And wherever there is music, I'll hear you.
Where the paints drip, and the trees grow I'll see you.
And where the waters meet, I'll swim to you.

Butterfly surfers

Shy little butterflies, moving flecks of yellow green
Why do you play among the breaking waves? What could this mean?
Mostly you just taste the ground where the ocean meets the land
But when the wind and the waves are just right you do something grand

The first time I saw you flying just ahead of the waves
I thought the wind had caught you and the ocean would be your grave
But the wind was calm and the waves smooth and sleek
Dancing in the air just ahead of the waves, what is it that you seek?

Gathering in a small group just above a rolling wave
Riding down the cushion of air, could it be a thrill that you crave?
Fluttering down the curl of a forming tube that shoots out butterflies in a clap
Why would you take that risk, just in time escaping from the trap?

Could it be you seek the same thrill of the blond tan boys bobbing in the sea?
Could an insect play the same games as me?
Do they take a few minutes out of the hustle of their life, one summer long?
In his place would you take some time to play before your summer was gone?

A Puppy's Tale

The first thing she remembered upon opening her eyes
Dreams of emerald green fields and sapphire blue skies
Of running through the long grass with brothers and sisters by her side
She wished they were still with her, not gone off to hide
But she had a new home now and other friends to make
The little puppy never cried, just wagged her tail and smiled
For her new owners really loved her,
In their new home by the lake.

As time passed by the puppy grew and had a family of her own,
Oh how she loved her puppies as she watched them play and roam
But then a strange fear set in as the puppies started to grow
For it seemed she must already somehow know
Then the puppies all left for new homes of their own
Though she herself was once a little puppy now all big and grown
She felt the pain of tears as she was now left all alone.
